Philip Greiner was a Farmer. Philip was born at Warwick Township, Lancaster Co., PA, on 7 August 1792.8,9,10 He married Maria Margaretha Hollinger, daughter of Johann Adam Hollinger and Maria Barbara Rüsch, on 20 April 1813 at First Reformed Church, Lancaster, Lancaster Co., PA.8,11,12,13 A share of John Greiner's estate went to Barbara, Peter, Emanuel, Barbara, Philip and Catherine at Lancaster Co., PA, on 1 April 1854.14 He made a will at Lancaster Co., PA, on 25 January 1864. Will #A2/490.15 Philip died on 30 May 1872 at Mount Joy, Lancaster Co., PA, at age 79.16,9,17 His body was interred in June 1872 at Florin, Lancaster Co., PA, at Camp Hill Cemetery.18 Philip's will was probated at Lancaster, Lancaster Co., PA, on 11 June 1872.15 Upon Philip's death, an account of his estate was exhibited at Lancaster, Lancaster Co., PA, on 3 March 1873. Estate #28-271.19
Philip was probably born in Warwick Township, since his father had resided there until about 1815. He apparently married before moving to Donegal Township, since his first two children were born in Warwick Township. This evidence was found in Philip and Margaret's family Bible, which is in the posession of William E. Greiner10. (See a copy and transcription of the Bible in the appendices.) He was found on the same page of the 1820 census of Donegal Township as his father, so it is most likely that he moved with his father Valentine when he purchased land there. In 1832 Philip and his brother John each inherited one of two adjacent farms that comprised their father's land purchase.
Philip purchased a grandfather clock that has been passed down through several generations. In the summer of 2000 it was still in the posession of Mattie Greiner, widow of Philip's great-grandson John. There is a handwritten inscription inside the clock, written on 20 August 1932 by Philip's grandson, Philip Sheridan Greiner, also known as Philip R. Greiner.
"In the year of 1814 this clock was purchased in Maytown by Philip Greiner and lived 1/8 mile E. of Graybill Church [East Donegal Township] and give it to John H. Greiner his son 1865 and he gave it to Philip R. Greiner his son 1907."
Philip and Margaret were charter members of the United BrethChurchurch in Florin in 1839. The church was built in 1842 on Church Street, on land donated by Philip Greiner and Jacob Geyer 20. From a church history,
"It was in 1839 that the first United Brethren class was organized in this locality. There were eight members - Charles Zellers and wife, John Geyer and wife, Philip Greiner and wife and Christ Hershey and wife. [...] In 1842 the people decided to build a church. This was the first United Brethren Church built in Lancaster County. [...]The ground was donated to the class of [sic] Philip Greiner and Jacob Geyer, on condition that it may never be sold. The results of this church can never be told. It was the 'Bee-Hive' of the United Brethren people of Lancaster County, for from it were sent off the following classes, which developed into other 'Hives': Columbia, Lancaster, Mount Joy, Ironville, Newton, Manheim, Mountville, Elizabethtown." 21
Philip sold his farm land in 1852, just two years before his wife's death. He survived her by fifteen years. He resided in Mount Joy with his daughter Martha from that time on.

Valentine Greiner was a Farmer. He married Catharine Barbara Enck, daughter of John Enck and Maria Barbara [Enck].5 Valentine was born at PA on 21 May 1761.5,6,7 He made a will at Lancaster Co., PA, on 19 June 1826.8 Valentine died on 27 December 1831 at age 70.5,7 Valentine's will was probated at Lancaster, Lancaster Co., PA, on 13 March 1832.8 His body was interred in 1832 at Maytown, Lancaster Co., PA, at Maytown Reformed Cemetery.9
Becker 5 states Valentine's birthdate as 8 August 1763. A brother William is listed with the same 1761 birthdate. I have found no other evidence of a brother William. Valentine's tombstone clearly shows his birthdate as 1761 and his age at death as 70. He was most likely born in Warwick (now Penn) Township, where his father farmed a part of the original Greiner land grant.
Valentine was listed as a member of Captain Custer's (3rd) Company of the 3rd Battalion of the Lancaster County Militia in 178010. It is difficult to determine whether this could have been his father. He is not listed as a junior in the 1780 list, but his father would have been 56 years old. In 1781 and 1782 he (as Felty or Valentine, Jr.) was listed with Captain Custer's (3rd) Company of the 3rd Battalion11,11. From 1783 through 1785 he was in Captain Huber's (6th) Company of the 6th Battalion12,13,12,13.
Valentine inherited all of his father's land in Warwick Township, while his brother Martin received a tract of land in Rapho Township that had been patented by their father14. Valentine was 33 years old when his father died. He subsequently acquired several tracts of land from neighbors to expand his holdings by nearly 100 acres. (See the chapter on Greiner Land Records.)
In 1812 Valentine was one of the executors of the will of Frederick Köhler15. This may have been the same person who was a witness to Valentine's father's will.
In 1815, when Valentine was 54 years old, he sold all his land in Warwick Township and bought two adjacent tracts in Donegal (now East Donegal) Township 16,17. Both of these properties were assessed for taxes around this time.18 We are fortunate these tax lists survived, since the assessments give us a detailed picture of what both farms were like.
Valentine's land in Warwick Township adjoined his cousin Martin's, as well as several other landowners who were named. The 262 acres were assessed on 1 April 1815. The following structures were listed:
1 dwelling of timber, 2 stories, 32' x 24'
1 barn, lower part stone, upper part timber, 22' x 18'
1 old stable, 12' x 12'
1 brick smoke house, 4' x 6'
1 joiner and smith shop, 1 story, 30' x 18'
1 dwelling house of timber, 25' x 30'
1 timber stable, 15' x 20'
The estate was valued at $21,333. It was noted that Robert Coleman had purchased it for cash.16
The land Valentine purchased in East Donegal Township from the estate of David Bowman was valued at $33,275.17 On 1 June 1816 the property of 255 acres included the following structures:
1 dwelling house of log, one story, 26' x 30'
1 barn of stone and wood, 20' x 30'
1 corn house, 18' x 25'
1 dwelling of log, one story, 24' x 28'
1 barn of stone, 26' x 30'
The two houses and barns probably indicate that the property consisted of the two farms eventually inherited by Valentine's sons. John was 28 and Philip 23 and married at the time the farm was purchased, so they probably each were given their own house to live in.
At the time Valentine wrote his will in 1826 he left the farm on which he lived to his eldest son John. Son Philip inherited the other farm on which he already resided. Valentine's will was written approximately a year after his wife's death8. The will required John and Philip to provide his sustenance for the remainder of his life. Valentine lived five years longer. (See a transcription of Valentine's will in the appendices.)
The children of Valentine and Catherine are known from Valentine's will, written in 1826. John was apparently the eldest surviving, and his birthdate is documented on his tombstone and confirmed by censuses. Philip's birthdate is also on his tombstone, as is daughter Catherine's. She was still single in 1838 when she released her brothers as executors of their father's estate 19. She apparently remained so until her death. Barbara and husband John Helman were both dead by the time Valentine made his will in 1826, leaving three young children.
Recently I discovered the baptism of a son George of Valentine and Catharine in the records of St. Paul's ReforChurchurch in Manheim20. The fact that this is the only known couple with those names, and the time frame of the birth, would indicate that George is correctly placed in this family as the eldest child. A George and Susannah Greiner sponsored a baptism at St. Paul's on 23 January 1822. This could be Valentine's son, but no further information is known about him.

Valentine was born at Meckesheim, Pfalz, Germany, in October 1724.2 He was baptized at Meckesheim, Pfalz, Germany, on 15 October 1724.3 He married Anna Barbara Bretz.4 Valentine Greiner was a Farmer. He made a will at Lancaster Co., PA, on 12 August 1794. Witnesses were an unknown person . Will #Y2/223.5 Valentine died in September 1794 at PA at age 69.6,7,5 An inventory for Valentine Greiner's estate was conducted on 29 September 1794 at Warwick Township, Lancaster Co., PA. Witnesses were an unknown person .8 Valentine's will was probated at Lancaster, Lancaster Co., PA, on 24 October 1794.7,5
The date of Valentine's birth is uncertain. Although earlier researchers have given the date as 1727 or 1729, Burgert9 shows the christening of a son Johan Valenthin to Martin and Barbara at Meckesheim, Germany in 1724. It is apparent that he was born before his parents immigrated.
The surname of Valentine's wife Barbara had been the source of some confusion in the past. However, her maiden name was found in Bible records of their daughter Anna Barbara Fishburn4. (See a copy of the Bible record in the appendices.) Although the date of their marriage is uncertain, it would most likely have been before the birth of their first son, Philip, in 1748.
Valentine Greiner left a family Bible, which is in the posession of Mary Greiner Wheeler. It is inscribed with the year 1759, and indicates the birth of a son on 21 May 1761. The Bible passed to Valentine's son Martin in 1804, possibly on the death of Barbara Greiner. It was eventually purchased by Martin's descendant, Martin K. Greiner in 1866. (See a copy and transcription of the Bible pages in the appendices.)
In 1752 Valentine received 136½ acres of land in Warwick (now Penn) Township from his mother10. This was one half of the land originally warranted to his father and eventually patented to his mother in 1747. Valentine warranted a small 13 acre plot adjacent to this land in 175311. In 1760 he purchased an additional 30 acres from his brother Adam's half of the parcel12. (See the chapter on Greiner Land Records.)
During the 1760s Valentine held the mortgage for several parcels of land in and around the village of Manheim. In 1785 he received a patent on 189¼ acres in the upper portion of Rapho Township13. It appears this was bought for his son Martin, who received "a certain plantation in Rapho township" in Valentine's will. Valentine's son Valentine received the land in Warwick Township5.
Valentine was enrolled in Captain John Gingery's Company of the 9th Battalion of the Lancaster County Militia in 1778. Valentine also was listed in Captain Henry Custer's (3rd) Company of the 3rd Battalion in 178014. Although this could be the same person, it is more likely his son, however, since by this time Valentine would have been 56 years old. Also, Felty (the nickname for Valentine's son Valentine) appears in the Captain Custer's Company for the next two years. There is no evidence that Valentine saw any service.
Valentine wrote his will in August, 1794, "being very sick but of good and perfect memory and understanding". Since an inventory of his estate was conducted on 29 September, he must have died in the interim. The will states that he was of Warwick Township. This would seem to indicate that he lived on the original farm and not on the land in Rapho Township. Witnesses to the will were Frederick Shitz and Frederick Köhler. Sons John and Philip did not receive their share of the estate (£606,13) until 1802 and 1803, when they released the executors, Valentine and Martin 15,16. This may have been a result of the death of their mother, Barbara. (See a transcript of Valentine's will in the appendices.)
Valentine's inventory includes a wide variety of interesting items8. It exhibits a life of farming as well as some examples of luxury for the day. The necessities of farming included tools, various barrels and tubs, a mare, a hog, and a cow. Products of the farm were corn and wheat. The evidence of spinning wheels and cloth in a large amount may indicate the growing of flax that was used to spin cloth. There were quite a few items of furniture mentioned. Several bedsteads, at least half a dozen chests and dressers, two tables, iron kitchen furniture, and a stove were included. Sheets, table cloths, and blankets would have dressed up the house. Pewter and tin utensils were mentioned, as well as a clock. The items of highest value were wearing apparel, a mare, and the linen cloth. (See a copy and transcript of Valentine's inventory in the appendices.)
Much of Valentine's estate was tied up in bonds to friends and neighbors (a total of nineteen). It would appear that he was able to use the wealth he acquired either very shrewdly to gain more, or very generously to help finance his friends. I have found several mortgages in Valentine's name in the deed books at the Lancaster County courthouse. In addition to buying more property to enlarge his original land, it would appear that he helped finance others acquiring property.
Valentine's estate amounted to over £1000. (Although the United States was formed after 1776, people continued using money issued by the individual states in their original currency for some time.) This estate was quite large, compared to that of his brother Adam's ten years later. In addition, the value of his land was increasing. His son sold the property in 1815 for £8100. At least half of the property was inherited by Valentine from his mother.
