Martin was born at Pfalz, Germany, circa 1702.3,4 His baptism name was Johann Martin. Martin was confirmed at Meckesheim, Pfalz, Germany, in 1717.5 He married Anna Barbara Klein before 1724 at Pfalz, Germany.1,2,6 Martin immigrated, on 5 September 1730, at Philadelphia, Philadelphia Co, PA, on Alexander and Ann.7 Martin died circa November 1742 at Lancaster Co., PA.8 An inventory for Martin's estate was conducted in November 1742 at Lancaster Co., PA. Witnesses were an unknown person .9
Although some sources place Martin's birth as early as 1700, his confirmation record at Meckesheim at age 15 adds a degree of certainty to the year 1702. Burgert10 states that no marriage record for Martin has been found. Various sources11,2 put his marriage to Barbara at 1727, but if Valentine was born in 1724, as his baptism record at Meckesheim shows, then we must assume the marriage was earlier. We find in Strassburger12 that Martin arrived in Philadelphia on the ship Alexander and Ann from Rotterdam, William Clymer, master. Martin was included on a list of persons on board that ship who signed an oath of allegiance to the King of England. The list of signatures in Strassburger's book shows Martin Creiner, with a letter M between the two names. Several researchers have assumed this to be Martin's middle initial. Because the style of the letter is different than the signature, I believe it is Martin's mark (made because he couldn't write) rather than his initial.
Martin and Barbara settled in Warwick (now Penn) Township in Lancaster County, near the present village of Penryn. Martin received a warrant for a tract of land on 23 November 1737, which was surveyed that year at 273 acres. Because he was unable to satisfy the conditions of the warrant before he died, Barbara was granted another warrant on 23 December 1743. The land was patented to her on 21 January 1747 and recorded as deed number A13-437 at the courthouse in Philadelphia13. (See a transcript and photograph of the patent in the appendices.) Contrary to other sources who imply that Barbara was issued an additional tract of land, the copy of the survey at the Pennsylvania State Archives (C51-296) shows that it was the same tract as originally warranted to Martin. (See a copy of the tract map in the chapter on Greiner Land Records.)
Martin's death is proven by an administrative bond issued to his wife Barbara in November 17428, as well as an inventory of his estate conducted in the same month9. Jacob Hegi and Jacob Myer signed for the bond along with Barbara. These documents were found in the Lancaster County Historical Society. (See a copy and transcript of the bond in the appendices.)
The inventory of Martin's estate was written in German (or possibly a mixture of English words and German script and spelling). It is not written very clearly, so I have been able to translate only a few lines. There appears to be a few items of clothing, such as a hat and coat. Farm implements, such as a wagon, two plows, an ax, and grubbing hoes were included. Fifty bushels of wheat was mentioned, perhaps some hay, and apparently some cattle. The total estate amounted to £220 in the local currency of the colony. £110 of that was one large item, which I can't identify. (See a copy of the inventory in the appendices.)
Barbara executed two deeds on 16 May 1752 to her sons Adam and Valentine14,15. These divided the original tract in half, each brother receiving 136½ acres. Adam received the eastern part of the tract and Valentine the western part. Both sons obtained warrants and deeds at a later time for tracts adjoining the original16,17,18,19,20. (See the chapter on Greiner Land Records.)
I have found no indication of when Barbara died. Several sources use the date 1752. However, a receipt for payment of seven years of quit-rent was issued to Barbara Gryner on 29 Mar 175421. This would seem to indicate she was still living at that time. Most sources seem to be unsure of where Martin and Barbara are buried. Some say it was at the Penryn Union Cemetery, others the Greiner farm cemetery in Rapho Township. The Penryn Church was not established until 1752. The latter is highly unlikely, since the tract was not warranted until 175022. In any case, it is apparent that no record has remained of their burial. Any suggestion for a burial place can only be based on a logical conjecture.
Many researchers assume that Martin and Barbara had another son, Matthias. I believe this mistake arose from a misreading of the baptism records of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Brickerville. An inspection of Stöver's transcription of the records obviously shows Johann Cunradt born to Martin Greiner, followed by Matthais born to Matthais Widtmann. Burgert also notes that the wife of Conrad Glassbrenner, who sponsored the baptism of Cunradt, was Margaretha Greiner, a sister of Martin. Martin's wife, Barbara, sponsored the baptism of two of Conrad and Margaretha's children.

Adam was born at Lancaster Co., PA, on 17 June 1731.3,4,5 He married Maria Catherine Laber on 21 June 1757 at Lancaster Co., PA.4,3,6 He made a will at Lancaster Co., PA, on 19 May 1798. Witnesses were an unknown person . Will #H1/466.7 Adam died on 22 May 1803 at Penn Township, Lancaster Co., PA, at age 71.3,4,5 His body was interred in 1803 at Penn Township, Lancaster Co., PA, at Penryn Cemetery.3,4,8 An inventory for Adam Greiner's estate was conducted on 6 March 1804 at Warwick Township, Lancaster Co., PA. Witnesses were an unknown person .9
In 1752 Valentine received 136½ acres of land in Warwick (now Penn) Township from his mother10. This was one half of the land originally warranted to his father and eventually patented to his mother in 1747. Adam patented an adjoining tract of 94 acres in 176211. I suspect that Adam must have purchased additional land, since the land he willed to his sons amounted to at least 340 acres. I have not been able to find additional evidence to support that.
During the Revolutionary War, Adam appeared twice in the lists of Lancaster County Militia. In 1778 he was a member of Captain John Gingery's Company of the 9th Battalion. In 1780 he was in the 3rd Battalion under Captain Henry Custer12. It does not appear that Adam saw any service.
Adam made his will in 17987. He names only three children; Martin, the executor, John, and an unnamed daughter married to Michael Steckbeck. Martin received the original property, and John the next adjoining property. Adam made several stipulations about how the land and his posessions were to be divided. His daughter and husband received a farm in Hanover Township, Dauphin County.
The inventory of Adam's estate provides an insight into his life as a farmer. It included some clothing, kitchen items, and household furniture. Most of the time, however, were farming tools and associated equipment. No animals were mentioned, although saddles and harnesses were. Perhaps one of his children maintained the animals for the farm. Although tools for processing and spinning flax were included, no large amount of cloth was. The largest items of value were clothing, a clock, and a wagon. Adam was owed quite a large sum of money by his son-in-law, Michael Steckbeck, and a smaller amount by John Unger, perhaps another in-law. The total estate of £269 was not very substantial, however, considering the rather large size of his brother Valentine's estate. (See a copy and transcription of Adam's inventory in the appendices.)
