His body was interred at Maytown, Lancaster Co., PA, at Maytown Reformed Cemetery.2 He married Barbara [Greiner].3,4 John was born at PA on 23 August 1787.3,4 John died on 12 December 1853 at age 66.3 Upon John's death, his estate was administered at Lancaster Co., PA, on 1 April 1854. Estate #5-85.5
John died with a will, instructing his executors to sell his possessions and divide the proceeds as follows. His widow, Barbara, was to have $4700 plus up to $300 worth of furniture. The remainder was to be divided equally among his brother Philip and two sisters, Catharine and Barbara. The executors produced an account on 1 April 1854. John's widow received her share and released the executors on the same day. The account was recorded 13 August 1854. 5
The share of the estate devised to daughter Barbara Helman became vested in her three orphaned children: Peter, Emanuel, and Barbara Koehler. Apparently Emanuel had declared bankruptcy in 1852 and was not able to meet his debts. Immediately after John's death, Emanuel transferred his share of the estate to brother Peter for $450. Soon thereafter at least one dozen different people submitted claims against Emanuel's share of the estate for the debts he still owed them.
Included among the claimants were John H. Greiner, Philip's son, and Adam Greiner, another descendant of Adam Greiner (1731 - 1803). It took until 15 Jan 1855 for an auditor to settle the claims. 6 After subtracting claims from Emanuel's share of $512, Peter Helman received only $1.55 of that share, in addition to his own share.

Although Barbara and John's marriage date was transcribed from church records as 1805, it is obviously wrong. She would have been only eleven years old. The date is more likely to be 1815, less than a year before the birth of their first child.
Following her husband's death, Barbara and her father, Valentine Greiner, were granted letters of administration for the estate of John Helman on 3 September 1823. (See an extract of the letters in the appendices.) On the same day, in addition to Barbara and Valentine, Peter Albright of Donegal Township and Jacob Chitty of Elizabeth Township signed a bond for three thousand, six hundred dollars. Jacob was married to John Helman's sister Maria Elizabeth8,9.
