Philip H. Greiner was a farmer. Philip was born at East Donegal Twp., Lancaster Co., PA, on 19 April 1816.5,6,7 He married Mary [Greiner] before 1842.5,6 He married Mary Nissley after 1857.5,6 Philip died on 16 March 1893 at age 76.6 His body was interred in March 1893 at Florin, Lancaster Co., PA, at Camp Hill Cemetery.8
Philip was enumerated as a carpenter with his first wife and three oldest children in the 1850 census of East Donegal Township. By the 1860 census his first wife had died, and he had married again. Philip and his second wife had two additional children and were living in Mount Joy Township. By 1870 Philip had acquired a farm from Abraham and Martha Strickler. It was located on Union School Road in East Donegal Township, south of Florin. By that time his older children had left home or died. His two youngest daughters were living with he and his second wife. The same family group was found in the 1880 census, again in East Donegal Township.
Of the children from Philip's first marriage, only two have been traced. Mary Ann was listed with Andrew Armstrong as a domestic servant in the 1870 census of Mount Joy Borough. Her tombstone was found in Mount Joy Cemetery in the same plot as her sister Fianna Metzger. It would appear that she never married. Fianna married and remained in Mount Joy. I have not been able to trace Barbara or Henry.
The two daughters of Philip's second marriage, Melinda and Fanny, both remained single their entire life. Their father sold them a house in Mount Joy on Marietta Street after their mother died 9. This was just after Philip had sold his farm land on Union School Road. One could imagine that Philip lived with his daughters for the remaining five years of his life.
Philip Greiner, Jr. and Martha (his sister ?) are mentioned by Gibbel as members of the original class (1860) of St. Mark's United Brethren Church in Mount Joy 10.

Martha was found living with her father in the 1850 and 1860 censuses. The 1870 census shows a Martha Good, age 53, keeping house for Philip. A daughter Martha was mentioned in Philip's will of 1864.6 Martha Good is also mentioned in the account of Philip's estate.7 Martha may have married, or this could be an entirely different person. I have found no evidence of either.

There is a bit of a mystery about Valentine contained in his father's will of 1864. It stated "If however at the time of my death my son Valentine should be out of the State and be uncertain whether he be living or dead then I order and direct my Executors or the survivor of them to place his said share of money at interest upon good security until he arrives or so retain it until his two children Edward and Elmor [sic] Ellsworth arrive at the respective age of twenty one years and pay the same to them...". Valentine must have returned in 1864, because he had three more daughters between 1865 and 1870. In 1872 Valentine assigned all rights from his father's estate to his brother Jacob, as well as giving him power of attorney. Valentine enlisted in Company E of the 10th Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment on 10 September 1862. I have not been able to find a Civil War service record or any other evidence to show that he actually served. Was he injured or ill when he returned, that he became dependent on the mercy of his brother? Valentine died before the 1880 census, and further information about his wife and daughters has not been found.
