Jonathan Woodside1
M, b. circa 1757, d. 8 July 1809
Father | James Woodside b. c 1725, d. 1805 |
Mother | Margaretha Trotter |
Jonathan Woodside was born circa 1757.2 He married Jane [Woodside]; based on census information of son Jonathan F. Estate #8, "Laurel Messenger", Nov 1976, p. 190; deed #10-310, Somerset Co. Jonathan Woodside was a wheelwright. He died on 8 July 1809 at Somerset Co., PA; estate records.3 He was buried at Upper Turkeyfoot Twp., Somerset Co., PA; Younkin (or Paddington) cemetery.4 His estate was probated on 21 July 1809 at Somerset, Somerset Co., PA; Estate #8, "Laurel Messenger", Nov 1976, p. 190.
James Woodside's will identified his eldest son as Jonathan. In 1799 James sold 50 acres of land in Upper Paxton Township to Jonathan of Turkeyfoot Township, Somerset County, Pennsylvania. Jonathan is listed in several tax lists of Upper Paxton Township from 1778 until 1787. The federal census of 1790 finds him in Bedford County (which became Somerset County in 1795).
Jonathan served as a sergeant in the Lancaster County militia for several years between 1779 and 1783. Records of the 4th Battalion state that "a detachment under command of Captain John Rutherford marched to Bedford County in April 1779 for the protection of the inhabitants. From Captain Martin Weavers Company were included Jonathan Woodside, sergeant and Andrew Yeager, private". It is very possible that this visit provided the inducement for Jonathan to return later to settle in this county.
In 1793 Jonathan obtained a warrant for 185þ acres of land in Somerset County. He patented this tract in 1802. Land records of Somerset County show that Jonathan bought additional land there in 1795. He purchased more in 1800 and 1808. Jonathan is found in the 1800 census of Somerset County with a wife and three children. However, when his estate was probated in 1809, only his wife Jane and underage son Jonathan F. are mentioned.
According to land records, the younger Jonathan moved to Chillicothe, Ross County, Ohio about 1821. Land transactions between he and his mother Jane show that she married James Wright Sr., and they moved to Perry County, Ohio. Later federal census records show that the younger Jonathan married and died in Ross County before 1850. Additional sources.5

Jonathan F. Woodside was born circa 1800; based on census evaluation.2 He married Elleanor Baley on 18 January 1821 at Ross Co., OH; by Robert G. Wilson.3 Jonathan F. Woodside was a merchant and a lawyer.2 He died before 1850; 1850 census lists wife only.2
Jonathan and Elleanor moved to Chillicothe, Ross County, Ohio about 1821, according to land transactions recorded in Somerset County, Pennsylvania. The 1850 census indicates at least the following two children, but earlier censuses would suggest there may have been some others. The censuses also indicate that Jonathan's mother Jane was living with the family at least from 1830 to 1850, at which date she was 88 years old.2 Additional sources.4,2
