James Woodside
M, b. circa 1725, d. 1805
James Woodside was born circa 1725 at Ireland; assuming 21 yrs at immigration. He immigrated on 16 September 1746 into Philadelphia, Philadelphia Co., PA.1 He married Margaretha Trotter on 12 September 1754 at Dauphin Co., PA.2 James Woodside was a farmer. He died in 1805 at Dauphin Co., PA; date of will probate. His estate was probated on 20 December 1805 at Harrisburg, Dauphin Co., PA; will #B310, Dauphin Co courthouse.
There are several facts placing James Woodside in Dauphin County. There is no proof that the James who immigrated in 1746 is the same who married in 1754 and died in 1805, but an argument can be made on that premise. If we make an assumption that James was about 21 years old when he immigrated, he would have married at age 29, fathered John at age 35, and died at age 80. A John Woodside also immigrated into Philadelphia in 1745. It is possible this could be a brother of James, but at this time there is absolutely no proof of that. There is a possibility that James and John were two of three brothers who, according to family tradition, immigrated from Ireland.
In 1767 James applied for warrants to two tracts of land in the lower part of Upper Paxton township. He is mentioned at least once in Pennsylvania records of the Revolutionary War. He was paid 2 pounds 10 shillings for guns lost during Washington's retreat from Long Island and White Plains, New York. That event occurred in the fall of 1776. He appeared on several lists of taxable men in Upper Paxton township from 1758 through 1787. In 1779 he was listed with 100 acres of land, two horses, four cows and six sheep. He was enumerated on the 1790 federal census next to his son John, but not in 1800. Because there was a male over 45 years old listed with John in 1800, and John would have been 40, it is not difficult to assume that James was living with his son.
The probate of James' estate in 1805 establishes the fact that John and Jonathan were his sons and Mary his daughter. The land mentioned in the will appears to be the same two tracts that James warranted in 1767. There are two deeds transferring those tracts to his sons in 1799 and 1800. James' daughter Mary mentioned in the will is most likely the same Mary Woodside that married DeWalt Novinger. Her birth date is appropriately near to her brothers'. And DeWalt Novinger warranted a tract of land adjacent to James Woodside. Additional sources.3
