Burial*She was buried at Standing Stone Cemetery, Standing Stone, Bradford Co., PA.2
Anecdote*There is a very interesting and touching story about the Peter and Alice Hardenstine family told by the youngest child, Paul Adam. In October, 1924 the family began a journey from Bradford County, Pennsylvania to Lake County, Florida. Their eldest daughter Edith and her husband James Larrabee had already moved to Florida. They had found work in the lumbering business to be very lucrative compared to conditions in Bradford County. Jim and Edith urged their parents to bring the family to Florida to see for themselves.
The extended family of twelve piled into two cars which were seemingly unfit for such a journey today - a Ford Model T and an Overland. The parents, Peter and Alice, took along five of their children: Carolyn, Maude, Evelyn, Aretta and Paul. Maude's boyfriend, Charles Christian, provided one of the cars. They were married while the family was in Florida. Carolyn was already married to Floyd Platt. Three of their children went along also. The cars were also loaded with camping equipment. The family erected a large tent each night to provide accommodations.
There were very few paved roads at that time. Much of what they traveled on was dirt or sand. No road signs directed them along the way. The sun and a compass were their guide. The major problem encountered was getting through Washington, D.C. They retraced their path three times before finding the right direction through the city. Some things never change! It took the family two weeks to complete their journey.
The Larrabees were living deep in the forest. The Hardenstine family stayed in Florida over the winter, planning to return home later in the Spring. Each Saturday they made a trip to the closest town of Umatilla to get groceries. One Saturday night in March of 1925 they were returning from Umatilla. A car approached from the opposite direction with extremely bright lights. Because of the way headlights functioned on cars of that time, the faster one drove, the brighter the lights burned. The cars met and locked their front wheels. The Hardenstines' Model T, with only a cloth top, flipped on its side. Alice Hardenstine was sitting in the back seat with young Paul asleep on her lap. When the car flipped over, she landed on the road and her neck was broken.
Alice was brought back to Bradford County by train along with her husband and family. She was buried in Standing Stone cemetery. Floyd and Carolyn Platt, along with Evelyn and Aretta, came back to Bradford County by car as soon as they packed their belongings. Charles and Maude Christian stayed in Florida for two more years before returning to New Albany, Pennsylvania. After the funeral Paul stayed with his sister Ida and George Wells. Peter and his children lived in an apartment for a while. Paul worked on the Wells farm that summer, and remained there while attending school for three more years. For the year 1924, and for the Hardenstines, this was an incredible journey. It is unfortunate it ended so sadly.
