Anecdote* | | Peter probably immigrated with his family to New York City in 1832. Although no Peter is listed on the passenger list, a child does appear in the correct birth order with his other siblings. Peter was found in the church records of New York City, where he was confirmed in 1834 and communed with his parents through Easter of 1837. He most likely migrated with his father to Monroe County before 1840. There were two males between 15 and 20 in Michael Hardenstine's household in 1840, one of which would be Peter. The first official record of Peter in Monroe County was the purchase of 30 acres of land in Stroud Township (deed #6-375, 21 Aug 1848). This parcel was a piece of a larger tract purchased by his father in 1837. The 1850 federal census included Peter and his wife Elizabeth residing in Smithfield Township. In 1857 Peter and Elizabeth sold their property (deed #8-228, 1 Oct 1857) and by the 1860 census were found in Asylum Township, Bradford County. In May of 1863 he purchased 50 acres in Standing Stone Township of Bradford County (deed #64-241, 29 May 1863). The 1869 Beers map of Standing Stone Township shows Peter as a landowner at that location. The property is located along state route 1025, West Valley Road. According to Paul Hardenstine who visited the property several years ago, only the foundation of the original house remains today. Peter's will of 1894 bequeathed his entire estate to son Joseph. After Peter's death in 1896, Orphans Court records reveal that Peter did not have enough money to pay the debts of the estate. Therefore Joseph was forced to sell the land he was to inherit at public auction (deed #216-487, 24 Feb 1897). An inventory of the estate was completed in 1896 after Peter's death. It included a variety of farm implements and several crops such as corn, wheat, rye and oats. The most valuable items were two cows ($20 each) and a horse and mare ($40 and $30). Peter and his wife Elizabeth are found on an undocumented list of Hardenstines buried in the church cemetery of the small village of Standing Stone. There is no gravestone. |
