Anecdote*2100Grandfather Hay’s parents came through the St. Lawrence River into Lake Erie to Cleveland and down the canal to Massillon and I was told they walked to the farms they located on leading to Malvern, Ohio from Salem Reformed Church in the country. There are 3 roads and Hays, Zwahlens and Foltz people located on these roads all close to each other. Of course Great Uncle John located East of Louisville.
Great grandfather John Hay and Great grandfather Volz were members of the Laudts Rath and got in trouble with the preacher after which 8 families of the John Hay branch came to America- 2 families landed in Pennsylvania, 2 families in Ohio, 2 in Wisconsin 1 in Illinois, 1 in Minnesota.
Adam Hay was born in Osnaburg township, Stark County, Ohio, on the 17th of May, 1857, being the son of Peter and Susan (Zwahlen) Hay, whose eight children are still living, their names, in order of birth, being as follows: Margaret M., who is the wife of Samuel Marks, of Osnaburg Twp., Adam, the immediate subject of this review; John who is a resident of Denver, Colo; Edward, who is in the employ of Aultman Manufacturing Co of Canton, this county; Albert, who is likewise a a resident of Canton; Susan C. who is the wife of Allen Baughman, of Portland, Oregon; Mary E. Who is the wife of Jacob Sweitzberger, of Canton Twp; and Cora A. who is the wife of Grant Shearer, of New York City.
Peter Hay, the father of the subject, was born in Rheinbeyn, Germany, in 1830, and in 1837 he accompanied his parents of their emigration to America, the voyage being made on a sailing vessel, which reached New York City after an interval of thirty-six days on the Atlantic. The grandfather of our subject likewise bore the name of Adam Hay. And he came forewith from New York to Stark County, Ohio, and purchased a tract of land in Osnaburg Twp. The same having been an integral portion of the farm now owned and occupied by the subject. Here he passed the remainder of his life, passing away in April 1868, at the age of seventy-one years. Peter Hay was reared on the old homestead farm and he continued his residence in the township until his death. Shortly after his marriage he came into possession of one hundred and sixty-two acres of the homestead farm, which originally comprised two hundred and six acres, the remaining forty-four acres which had been allotted to his sister, Mrs. Schwartz. Some time in the ‘60’s he purchased two pieces of land adjoining his farm on the east and comprising forty-four and fifty-six acres respectively, while in 1881 he bought eighty-four acres which had been allotted to his sister, thus making the area of his landed estate three hundred and ninety-four acres. He was a thoroughly progressive and scientific farmer, and was very successful in his efforts, having developed one of the fine farm properties of the county. In politics he gave his support to the Democratic party from the time of attaining his legal majority, while his religious faith was that of the Reformed Church, of which he and his wife were devoted members, while he held various official positions in the church. He was a man of sterling character, true and loyal in all the relations of life, and he held the unqualified confidence and esteem of all who knew him. His death occurred on the 17th day of September, 1901 and community mourned the loss of one of its most valued and honored citizens. Mrs. Susan (Zwahlen) Hay, mother of the subject at the time when her parents emigrated to America, was 12 years old. She was born in Switzerland in the year 1831. Her parents took up their abode on the farm ow owned by her brother Henry Zwahlen, on Osnaburg Twp., where they passed the remainder of their lives. She was summoned into eternal rest on the 12th of October, 1889, at the age of fifty-eight, having been a women of noble character and one who proved a devoted wife and mother while her children may wee “Rise up ad call her blessed.”.
