Peter probably immigrated with his family to New York City in 1832. Although no Peter is listed on the passenger list, a child does appear in the correct birth order with his other siblings. Peter was found in the church records of New York City, where he was confirmed in 1834 and communed with his parents through Easter of 1837. He most likely migrated with his father to Monroe County before 1840. There were two males between 15 and 20 in Michael Hardenstine's household in 1840, one of which would be Peter.
The first official record of Peter in Monroe County was the purchase of 30 acres of land in Stroud Township (deed #6-375, 21 Aug 1848). This parcel was a piece of a larger tract purchased by his father in 1837. The 1850 federal census included Peter and his wife Elizabeth residing in Smithfield Township.
In 1857 Peter and Elizabeth sold their property (deed #8-228, 1 Oct 1857) and by the 1860 census were found in Asylum Township, Bradford County. In May of 1863 he purchased 50 acres in Standing Stone Township of Bradford County (deed #64-241, 29 May 1863). The 1869 Beers map of Standing Stone Township shows Peter as a landowner at that location. The property is located along state route 1025, West Valley Road. According to Paul Hardenstine who visited the property several years ago, only the foundation of the original house remains today.
Peter's will of 1894 bequeathed his entire estate to son Joseph. After Peter's death in 1896, Orphans Court records reveal that Peter did not have enough money to pay the debts of the estate. Therefore Joseph was forced to sell the land he was to inherit at public auction (deed #216-487, 24 Feb 1897). An inventory of the estate was completed in 1896 after Peter's death. It included a variety of farm implements and several crops such as corn, wheat, rye and oats. The most valuable items were two cows ($20 each) and a horse and mare ($40 and $30). Peter and his wife Elizabeth are found on an undocumented list of Hardenstines buried in the church cemetery of the small village of Standing Stone. There is no gravestone.

Anna Maria Bush was born on 22 January 1834 at PA; Her birth date was listed as 27 Feb 1834 on her death certificate.1,2 She married Jacob Hardenstine, son of Michael Hardenstine and Elisabetha Kiefer, circa 1853.3 Anna Maria Hardenstine and Jacob Hardenstine sold 20 acres and 148 perches of land at Paradise Twp., Monroe Co., PA, to Godfrey Hardenstine on 15 August 1853.4 Anna Maria Hardenstine and Jacob Hardenstine sold 135 acres and 38 perches of land at Paradise Twp., Monroe Co., PA, to Theodore Hardenstine on 28 November 1900.4 Anna Maria Bush died on 14 May 1911 at Paradise Twp., Monroe Co., PA, at age 77.1,2 She was buried on 17 May 1911 at St. Paul's United Church of Christ Cemetery, Swiftwater, Monroe Co., PA.2,1
According to the 1900 census of Paradise Township, Jacob immigrated in 1833. He would have been 10 years old at the time. The ship passenger list discovered for the Michael Hartenstein family does not list a child Jacob. It is possible that Jacob immigrated at a later date with other family or friends, as was fairly common at the time. But I have not found him elsewhere in the passenger lists.
Analysis of the 1840 Stroud Township federal census entry for Michael Hardenstine includes a male between 15 and 20 years old. Jacob would have been 17 years old at the time. However, there is also evidence that Jacob returned to New York City in the 1840s. There is record of his confirmation there in 1843 and he sponsored the baptism of one of his brother Godfrey's children in 1846. By the time of the 1850 census Jacob had relocated to Paradise Township in Monroe County.
Jacob purchased 130 acres of land in Paradise Township in 1849. This property is located about three miles east of Swiftwater on Swiftwater Road, which turns into Bush Road. He purchased it at a public sale from the Monroe County sheriff (deed #25-160, 27 Apr 1849). According to the deed, the property contained "30 acres cleared, 25 acres ploughed and 5 acres of meadow". It also included a "log house, 1 1/2 stories high, a log cooper shop, fruit trees and a stream of water passing through the land". My wife and I located the property on Bush Road in 1991 and photographed what is probably the original house. It is just down the road from St. Paul's United Church of Christ (originally Reformed), where Jacob and his wife are buried. The identity of the house was proven by tracing deeds down to the present owner.
In 1853 Jacob conveyed 20 acres of this land to his brother Godfrey. It was quickly sold to an adjoining landowner (deed #6-523, 24 Aug 1853). Jacob is found as a property owner at this location on an 1875 Beers map of Paradise Township. Jacob and Anna Maria sold their land for one dollar to their son Theodore in 1900 (deed #53-465, 28 Nov 1900). In consideration for the property, Theodore was to take care of his parents for the remainder of their lives. Theodore and his siblings sold some of the land in 1916 (deeds #77-584 and #78-121). The remainder was sold in 1923 (deed #90-118).
Jacob and his wife Anna Maria were found in every census of Paradise Township from 1860 through 1900. Anna Maria was still living there in 1910 with her son Theodore and his family. Theodore apparently remained there for the rest of his life.
I have never discovered a record of the maiden name of Jacob's wife Anna Maria. However, by careful analysis of the 1850 census, a hypothesis can be made. There were only two young women named Anna Maria of the appropriate age in Paradise Township in 1850. One was Anna Maria Boyer and the other Anna Maria Larence (sic). The latter was enumerated only eight houses away from where Jacob lived at the time. She would seem to be the most likely choice. She was the only child living with Nicholas Bush, aged 82, and his wife Hannah, 81. There is a strong possibility that she was a grandchild, although the 1850 census did not specify relationships. It would be difficult to prove that, or to determine who her parents were, without additional research. I could not find anybody with the surname similar to Lawrence in the 1840 or 1860 census.

No record of Margaret can be found in the Herschberg church book. That would be expected, since her family emigrated in 1832, and she was reportedly born about 1833 or 1834, according to census records. However, her birth place was listed as Germany in every census. I believe it is most likely she was born in New York City after the family arrived from Germany. But her baptism was not recorded in the Lutheran Church records that I examined.
The first clue that she was part of this family was her inclusion in the 1850 census with Michael and his second wife Susan. The 1840 census entry for her father Michael shows a female between 5 and 10 years old, which would be the correct age for Margaret. The marriage of John Transue and Margaret was recorded in the local newspaper.
John Transue's father, Abraham E. Transue, purchased 400 acres in the upper northwest corner of Middle Smithfield Township in April 1858. (Deed #8-638, Monroe County courthouse, 7 Nov 1858.) Abraham subdivided this land with his son John and Margaret's father Michael Hartenstein. (Deed #9-178, 25 Apr 1859.) Michael's second wife Susan was apparently a sister to Abraham Transue (according to Linda Ferguson notes).
John and Margaret received 111 acres from his father. They lived adjacent to both of their parents for the next fourteen years, where most of their children were born. But in April 1872 John and Margaret sold this land. (Deed #24-456, 2 Apr 1872.) Sometime between then and 1880 they moved their family to Kansas. According to the article about Joseph Transue in Kansas History, they moved to Kansas in 1879. They were found in Leavenworth County in 1880 and by 1900 had moved to Jefferson County, just outside Lawrence, Kansas.
I have considered the possibility that Margaret was the orphaned or illegitimate daughter of a relative. I searched the church records of Herschberg and New York using that assumption. The only viable candidate I could find was the daughter of Michael Hardenstine's sister Margaret, who married Philip Köhler in 1833. They had a daughter Margaret in 1835 and a daughter Dorothea in 1837, who were baptized in New York City. I could not find the Köhler family after 1838, so it is possible that Michael could have adopted the child. I do not see this as probable though, since if Michael's wife died, it would be difficult for him to raise a young child. I suspect that Margaret was indeed a daughter of Michael and Elisabetha born in New York City, that her baptism was not recorded in the church books available, and that she moved with her father to Monroe County before 1840.
