Elisabetha Schmidt was born circa 1768 at Kleinbundenbach, Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany.1,2 She married Gottfried Hartenstein, son of Philipp Mathias Hartenstein and Eva Katharina Spacke, before 1792 at Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany.3,2 Elisabetha Hartenstein died on 31 October 1835 at Herschberg, Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany. Gottfried Hartenstein attested to her death.4,2
Gottfried Hartenstein and Elisabetha Schmidt were married around 1790, probably in the village of Thaleischweiler, in southwest Germany, in the state of Rheinland-Pfalz. Their children were born in the nearby village of Herschberg between 1792 and 1809. The baptisms of their three oldest children were recorded in the Lutheran Church records there. Because of the French occupation of that part of Germany during the Napoleonic Era, there were no church records kept between 1798 and 1813. The French government intended for all vital records to be kept by the civil authorities. While those records are available from the civil registry office in Wallhalben, exact dates are required to request records, and those dates are not known.
The remaining children of Gottfried and Elisabetha can be deduced from their appearance in later church records. They appeared as sponsors of baptisms, and spouses in marriage and baptism entries. While I have been able to document the lives of most of their children, the destiny of some of them is unknown.
Many of the Hartenstein children immigrated to the United States, beginning about 1831. They were among a large group of families from Herschberg and surrounding villages who emigrated at that time. The same families seen in the Herschberg church records also appeared in church records in New York City and other locations where they settled in the United States. Literally dozens of these families have been identified. Wherever they were found, they were seen as neighbors, as sponsors at the baptisms of each other's children, and as marriage partners. They can also be seen migrating back and forth between the areas where they settled.
I have researched the families of each of the children of Gottfried and Elisabetha in an attempt to trace their descendants. In most cases I have been successful. In the next few paragraphs I will briefly describe the ultimate destination of each of the children. For those who I have been able to trace for several generations, more details will follow in their own family sections of this work.
The eldest child, Johann Michael, married and had several children in Herschberg. He immigrated in 1832 to New York City, where his wife Elisabetha died in 1836 or 1837. Evidence from the Lutheran Church records confirms their presence in the city from Christmas 1832 until Easter 1837. Shortly thereafter Michael purchased land near East Stroudsburg in Monroe County, Pennsylvania, and moved there, where he remained the rest of his life. The family name can still be found in that county today.
The second child of Gottfried and Elisabetha was Anna Maria. She had several illegitimate children in Herschberg, but I could not find any evidence that she married. I did not find her in any United States records.
The baptism of a third child – a son Adam – was recorded in 1797, but no further reference to him was found. Presumably he died before the church records were resumed in 1814.
Heinrich Hartenstein was born, married, and had several children in Herschberg. He died there at the age of 38. His wife raised their children in Herschberg, but between 1850 and 1855 she and all the children immigrated to the United States and settled in Stark County, Ohio. Many other Herschberg immigrants had arrived in that area as a group during the migration of 1831. Heinrich's descendants can be found today in that area, as well as the surrounding counties of Portage and Mahoning.
There are a few references in the Herschberg church book to a Gottfried, son of Gottfried and Elisabetha. It seems probable that this child existed, but I have found no evidence of his birth, marriage, or death. There is no indication that he emigrated to America. See below for more details about this person.
Elisabetha Hartenstein married in the nearby village of Rieschweiler. She and her husband Theobold Gerber had several children. The deaths of two of the children were recorded in Herschberg church records. Theobold's death in 1843 was also recorded. I did not discover any further evidence of them in Germany. However, there is an Elisabetha Hartenstein found in the church records in New York City. She married Michael Anderje there in 1834 at age 30. While her age would indicate that she could be the daughter of Gottfried and Elisabetha, the previous marriage in Germany is problematic. Since Theobold Gerber did not die until 1843, it seems unlikely that his wife immigrated to America before 1834. I can find no other Elisabetha Hartenstein who would match her age. But without further evidence of her birth date, I cannot reach a valid conclusion.
Ottilia, daughter of Gottfried and Elisabetha, married Gottfried Kammerdiener in Herschberg. They had two children there before immigrating to New York City about 1831 or 1832. They had several more children in New York, where they appeared frequently in the Lutheran Church records. Gottfried died about 1858, but Ottilia (Matilda) lived until 1893. The descendants of Gottfried and Ottilia remained in the New York City area for many generations.
The next daughter, Louisa, married Michael Dreher in Herschberg. They also had several children before immigrating in 1832. They can be found in the New York church records, where they had additional children baptized. Michael and Louisa eventually moved to Stark County, Ohio and died there. Their descendants remained in that area.
Evidence in Herschberg also indicates that Gottfried and Elisabetha had a daughter Margaretha. A Margaret Hartenstein appeared in New York church records, where she married Philip Köhler in 1833. The record indicated that she was born about 1809. I feel fairly certain that this was the same person, especially since she disappeared from the records in Herschberg about 1832. Margaret and Philip had several children baptized in New York City, and they sponsored the children of other immigrants. But the last record I could find of them was 1838. I have not been able to determine whether they migrated to another location or remained in the city.

Gottfried Hartenstein was born at Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany. He sponsored the baptism of Gottfried Hartenstein , son of Michael Hardenstine and Elisabetha Kiefer, on 8 June 1816 at Herschberg, Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany.1
This child of Gottfried and Elisabetha is an enigma. He appears at least twice in the Herschberg church records clearly identified as "Gottfried, son of Gottfried Hartenstein". However, I was not able to find any birth or death entries for him. I could not find any evidence that he immigrated to the United States either.
Since he clearly sponsored the baptism of his brother Michael's child in 1816, he should have been at least 14 years old and confirmed by then. That implies he was born before 1802. It is certainly possible that he was born between 1798, when the church records ended, and 1802. In that case the only evidence of his birth would be a civil birth record, which I have not found. Given the known birth dates for his siblings, the best possibility for his birth would be mid-year 1801.
It is also possible that Gottfried was born before the eldest son Michael, somewhere other than Herschberg. Since we don't know exactly when or where Gottfried and Elisabetha were married, it is possible that they married and had their first child elsewhere before 1792. There is also a possibility that the references in the church records identified the wrong son of Gottfried.

Ottilia and Godfrey were among a group of several families from Herschberg, Germany who immigrated to America in the early 1830s. These families settled in several locations in the United States, but wherever they were found, their lives were intertwined. Several Hartenstein and Kammerdiener siblings emigrated about the same time. Many of these people appeared in the German Lutheran Church records of New York City.
Godfrey and his first wife Elisabetha Abert had two children in Herschberg, one of whom died shortly after birth. Elisabetha died in 1825. I have found no further information on their son Jacob, who was born in 1824. Gottfried and Ottilia's first two children – Godfrey and Louisa – were born in Herschberg before they left for the United States. Their remaining children were born in New York City.
Ottilia and Godfrey remained in New York City for their entire lives, as did many of their descendants. She was usually known as Matilda in records found in this country. Godfrey's occupation was consistently listed as a pedler. Many of their children continued in that or similar occupations for the remainder of the 19th century. The Kammerdieners lived in the 11th Ward of the city – a predominately German area at that time. The addresses where they lived on Stanton and Willet Streets are just a few blocks apart. They most certainly lived in tenement housing in that area.
The Kammerdieners appeared frequently in the Lutheran Church records. The first occasion was Christmas of 1832 when Godfrey and Ottilia received Communion. They were listed as communicants several times through the 1830s. They also served as sponsors for baptisms and marriages of their fellow immigrants. Several of their children were baptized there.
Godfrey died sometime between 1856 and 1858. He and his family appeared in the 1855 New York state census, and his name appeared in an 1855 - 1856 city directory, but his wife was listed in an 1858 - 1859 directory as a widow of Godfrey. No record of Godfrey's death has been found. Matilda continued to appear in city directory and census records through 1890. Her death was recorded in New York City records.
