Johannes Böttner was born on 25 January 1779 at Reichensachsen, Hessen, Germany.1 He was baptized on 31 January 1779 at Reichensachsen, Hessen, Germany.2 He married Anna Dorothea Wagner, daughter of Mathias Wagner and Anna Margaretha Stang, on 18 January 1807 at Reichensachsen, Hessen, Germany; The marriage record stated that the groom was a "soldier of the Regiment from Wurmb".3 Johannes Böttner was a Schneider (tailor) on 13 December 1812 at Reichensachsen, Hessen, Germany.4 He died on 2 September 1847 at Reichensachsen, Hessen, Germany, at age 68.5,6
I can account for all but one of the children of Johannes and Anna Dorothea. The eldest, Christoph, remained in Reichensachsen, married, and died there. John (Johannes), the main subject of this work, immigrated to the United States and settled first in Berks County, then Snyder County, Pennsylvania. Two of John’s siblings, Casper (Caspar) and Elisabeth (married Christoph Klebe), also emigrated and settled in Monroe County, Ohio. Four other siblings died young in Reichensachsen.
I have not been able to successfully account for George, the youngest child of Johannes and Anna Dorothea. I have found evidence that a George Boettner of the right age was living in Wheeling, West Virginia at the time of the 1870 and 1880 censuses. He later died in New Brighton, Pennsylvania. According to a transcript of family information from his Bible, his birth date was 26 Mar 1826. His first marriage was to Catherine Elizabeth Volibel on 1 Oct 1851.7
Several facts cause me to believe that there is a high probability that the George Boettner found in Wheeling is from this family. His birth date only differs by two days from that which we found in the Reichensachsen church records for George Böttner. I have found many cases where people don’t remember the exact date of their birth. George was located in Wheeling, near the two siblings of this family who immigrated to Monroe County, Ohio. That county is located about 30 miles down the Ohio River from Wheeling. Finally, the surname of George’s wife is similar in pronunciation to a common name in Reichensachsen – Vaupel.
There is also some contradictory evidence that suggests this might not be the correct person. According to the 1900 census, George Boettner immigrated in 1835. Since he would have only been about 9 years old, one would normally expect that he arrived with his parents. However, his parents died in Reichensachsen. Is it possible that he came with another related family? Until more definitive information is discovered, I cannot conclude with complete certainty that the George Boettner found in Wheeling is the child of Johannes and Anna Dorothea. I do have additional information on the descendants of George Boettner. Please contact the author if you are interested in this family line.
