He was born on 1 October 1922 at Marietta, Lancaster Co., PA.1 He married Mary Louise Quickle, daughter of Charles Readus Benjamin Quickle and Ada Estella Seidenstricker, on 16 December 1945 at Columbia, Lancaster Co., PA.2 James Monroe Goss died on 23 April 1984 at University of Virginia Hospital, Charlottesville, Albemarle Co., VA, at age 61.1 He was buried in April 1984 at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Norfolk, VA.1,3 Jim was born to Raymond Goss and Mary Dettinger, but it is not clear whether they were married. There is a baptism entry for Jim's older sister Mary in the records of the English Presbyterian Church in Marietta. Raymond and Mary were listed as the parents. There was no baptism entry for Jim. Note that Raymond Goss, Jr. was born to Raymond and Irene Nace on 23 September 1923. It is not clear when they were married.

James Goss appears twice in the Presbyterian church record. The session minutes of 22 Mar 1940 inticate that he was questioned by the church council about his desire to become a member. On 24 Mar he was admitted to church membership on profession of faith.

Jim and Dorothy, with the surname Goss, were both living with their Dettinger grandparents in Marietta in the 1930 census. By 1940 Dorothy had married, but Jim was still living with his grandparents.

Jim entered service during World War II on 13 January 1943 at New Cumberland, Pennsylvania. He was discharged 4 September 1943 at Fort George G. Meade, Maryland. When he applied for veteran's compensation on 13 February 1943 he and his wife Mary were living in Fentress, Pricess Anne County, Virginia with his mother Mary Cullipher.
