Anecdote* | John Kammerdiener had an interesting life history that can be documented from a variety of sources. He enlisted for service in the Civil War with Company F, 62nd Regiment New York Infantry (Anderson's Zouaves). He was mustered in on 3 Jul 1861 at Saltersville, near Jersey City, New Jersey, at the age of 24 years. His service and pension records are available from the National Archives.8 According to his service record, he served as a waggoner in the quartermaster's department. While on a march from Hancock, Maryland he deserted on 28 Oct 1862, taking his arms and equipment. John was enumerated on a list of deserters on 20 Mar 1863, indicating his probable whereabouts as Willet Street in New York City. This almost positively identifies him with this family, since that is where they lived according to several documented sources. On 26 August 1864 a John Kammerdiener enlisted at Alliance, Ohio for one year. The papers indicated that he was born in New York City about 1836, which is correct for this person. He was married on 30 August to Rachael Hofmann, and the following day they sold a parcel of land that Rachael had received from her father to her brother. He mustered in to Company K, 115th Regiment Ohio Infantry at Columbus, Ohio on 3 Feb 1865. He only served until 22 Jun 1865, when he was mustered out at Murfreesboro, Tennessee. John and Rachael bought the same land back from her brother in Jun of 1866. While one might question whether these two are the same person, consider the circumstances. Many other immigrants from the Herschberg, Germany area settled in Stark County, Ohio, just north of Alliance, in the 1830s. John's aunt and uncle, Louisa and Michael Dreher, lived there with their two sons. A John Kammerdiener was found in the 1870 census of Stark County with his new wife, Rachael Hofmann, whose parents were also immigrants from the same area. The widow's pension record for John's second wife mentions the first wife Rachael. I am most certain that John first enlisted for the Civil War in New York City. When he deserted his unit, it is possible that he went to Ohio to be with his relatives, and to avoid prosecution in New York City. Apparently later in the war he had second thoughts and reenlisted. John's later life can be documented from his pension file and the widow's pension file of his second wife, as well as New York City records. Apparently John and Rachael moved back to New York City after 1870, where they divorced in 1883. Rachael sold her land in Stark County in December of 1883. I could not find them in the 1880 census of New York City or Stark County. John married Amelia Wolf in 1885 in New York City and they had at least one child. There is no indication that he had any children with Rachel. In 1890 John began to apply for a disability pension, but for several years failed to convince the government that he qualified. His address changed frequently during the years 1890 - 1900, but they were all locations close to Willet Street in the German 11th ward of the city. By 1900 he had already been receiving a pension, since he filed for an increase at that time. At his death in 1910 he was being paid $20 per month. After John's death, his second wife Amelia applied for a widows pension for herself and a minor child. She initially had trouble getting approval, because there was some question about the legality of their marriage while John's first wife Rachael was living. After Rachael's death in 1904, there was a question about whether John and Amelia ever legalized their marriage. Regardless, Amelia's application was finally accepted and she received up to $30 per month at the time of her death. At that time she was living in Malden, Massachusetts, which is where their son John lived with his wife. I have not been able to discover whether there were any descendents from John Kammerdiener, Jr. |
