Anecdote*Fred Cluskey is most definitely the same person as Fred Sohlinger. He was born in New York City and enlisted in the US Army in 1860 under the name Sohlinger. It is possible that his father was not John Nicholas Sohlinger. Most census records indicate that his father was born in Ireland. After deserting from the Army in 1861, he moved to Stark County, Ohio where the Sohlingers had moved and many fellow German immigrants lived. He enlisted as a volunteer from there in 1862 under the name Cluskey. He maintained that name for the rest of his life.
