7 Co. War Dead
Arrive NY Today
Seven Lancaster Countians are among the first of the nation’s World War II dead to be returned from Europe, arriving in New York today, when the transport Joseph V. Connolly enters New York’s flower-strewn harbor with the bodies of 6,2000 American servicemen. Also aboard are the bodies of two men from Lebanon County and five from York County.
Officials of the federal, state and city governments and the combined military services will join with thousands of citizens in honoring the heroic dead and their relatives.
The Connolly will be escorted up the harbor by Navy, Coast Guard and Army craft, and an air escort will be provided by the Army Air Force.
The coffin of one soldier, a Congressional Medal of Honor winner, whose name, rank and organization will not be made known, will be borne on a caisson from the pier to Central Park for the Memorial Service.

T/4 Sylvester V. Herchelroth, twenty-one, who was killed in action Dec. 17, 1944, in Belgium during the Battle of the Bulge, was the son of Mr. and Mrs. John S. Herchelroth, 532 E. Market St., Marietta. He had previously been reported as missing in action.
Following receipt of a telegram Friday notifying them of the imminent arrival of his body, his parents are planning a military funeral. Since the young man was a member of the Pioneer Fire Co., Marietta, all members of that company who are members either of the Marietta American Legion or Veterans of Foreign Wars posts will take part in the services. Members of the Legion will serve as pall bearers, while the VFW men will make up the firing squad.
