Anecdote*On 13 Sep 1894 the Batesville (Indiana) Tribune reported that "Mr. Kammerdiener, wife and daughter, of Cincinnati, were visiting at Adam Bohl's Sunday". After much research, I concluded that the visitors were Adam Kammerdiener (1838 - 1896), his second wife Maggie Palmer, and probably his unmarried daughter Elizabeth. Adam was the son of Jacob Kammerdiener, who was probably born in Herschberg, Germany before 1815. Jacob married Christina Kiefer in Herschberg and their eldest child Adam was born there.

Adam Kammerdiener married Katharina Neumann in Herschberg in 1866. The births of their several children were recorded in the Evangelical Church records there. They immigrated sometime between 1879 and 1889, when Adam was naturalized in Cincinnati, Ohio. Adam and Katharina both died before 1900. Adam married a second time in August 1894. Perhaps this visit was to have his new bride meet his friends in Indiana.

Adam Bohl (ca. 1851 - after 1930) was a son of Adam Bohl (ca. 1818 - ca. 1856), who settled in Ripley County, Indiana before 1850. The elder Adam married Louisa sometime before 1847, when their first child Elizabeth was born. In 1850 they were living in Ripley County. They had at least two other children before 1857. Adam must have died about that time, since his wife remarried Philip Wagner in November 1857.

The younger Adam was living near Batesville in Adams Township, Ripley County, Indiana in the 1880 US census. Batesville was only 50 miles west of Cincinnati. By 1900 they had moved to Indianapolis in Marion County, Indiana.

Both Kammerdiener and Bohl are very common names in Herschberg and surrounding villages. I have traced many of these families as they immigrated and settled in the United States. For that reason I assume that Adam and Louisa Bohl came from the same area and were most likely related in some way to the Kammerdieners. I have not been able to find a plausible candidate for Adam Bohl in the Herschberg church records. Neither could I find a marriage record for them there.

Because I could not find a marriage record, there is no indication of Louisa's maiden name. I searched the Herchberg baptism records for Adam Bohl born about 1818, but found no one of that name. There were two girls named Louisa born around that time, one of whom married later in Herschberg. I also consulted a colleague in the nearby village of Höheinöd, who searched records there for Adam Bohl. There is one possible candidate there who immigrated with his parents in 1828. His parents settled in Brown County, Ohio, not very far east of Cincinnati. This is a definite possibility, although I have no further information to prove that this is the same person who settled in Ripley County, Indiana.
