Anecdote*Ottilia and Godfrey were among a group of several families from Herschberg, Germany who immigrated to America in the early 1830s. These families settled in several locations in the United States, but wherever they were found, their lives were intertwined. Several Hartenstein and Kammerdiener siblings emigrated about the same time. Many of these people appeared in the German Lutheran Church records of New York City.
Godfrey and his first wife Elisabetha Abert had two children in Herschberg, one of whom died shortly after birth. Elisabetha died in 1825. I have found no further information on their son Jacob, who was born in 1824. Gottfried and Ottilia's first two children – Godfrey and Louisa – were born in Herschberg before they left for the United States. Their remaining children were born in New York City.
Ottilia and Godfrey remained in New York City for their entire lives, as did many of their descendants. She was usually known as Matilda in records found in this country. Godfrey's occupation was consistently listed as a pedler. Many of their children continued in that or similar occupations for the remainder of the 19th century. The Kammerdieners lived in the 11th Ward of the city – a predominately German area at that time. The addresses where they lived on Stanton and Willet Streets are just a few blocks apart. They most certainly lived in tenement housing in that area.
The Kammerdieners appeared frequently in the Lutheran Church records. The first occasion was Christmas of 1832 when Godfrey and Ottilia received Communion. They were listed as communicants several times through the 1830s. They also served as sponsors for baptisms and marriages of their fellow immigrants. Several of their children were baptized there.
Godfrey died sometime between 1856 and 1858. He and his family appeared in the 1855 New York state census, and his name appeared in an 1855 - 1856 city directory, but his wife was listed in an 1858 - 1859 directory as a widow of Godfrey. No record of Godfrey's death has been found. Matilda continued to appear in city directory and census records through 1890. Her death was recorded in New York City records.
