                                                    BEGAN ARMY LIFE AT 11.

Gustav A. Schurman, One of Youngest

to Enlist for the Civil War and Play-

mate of "Tad" Lincoln, is Dead.

NEW YORK, July 20. - Gustav A. Schurman, one of the youngest men to enlist in the Northern army at the beginning of the Civil war, drummer boy and bugler for Generals Birney, Stoneman and Sickles, and friend and playmate for months at the White House of little "Tad" Lincoln, is dead at the home of his daughter in this city. He was a bootblack and only eleven years old when the war began.

The lad's father prevailed upon Col. E. Riley of the Fortieth New York to take him to the front. At Belleplaine the youngster met "Tad" Lincoln, who had accompanied the president and his mother on a visit to the army. The boys engaged in a horse race and became much attached to each other with the result that an order was issued attaching the bugler to the president's household.

President Lincoln told General Sickles that they needed diversion at the White House. It is said their wish was attained, for there are still stories of two boys to whom such a thing as a cabinet meeting had no terrors. When Lee made his dash for the North the bugler went back to General Sickles.

Since the war Mr. Schurman occupied positions in the custom house and various city departments.

Dear Fanny:

We part from you with feelings of love and of sorrow.

Our regret upon parting with a valued friend and dear companion is lightened for the moment as we recall the many pleasant hours spent in your society, the hearty good nature, the love of fun, and not only these, but those deeper and tenderer feelings of kindness and sympathy that you have ever shown.

These grateful memories will remain with us, and we would give you a tribute, though a very slight one, of the love and esteem we bear you. As an expression of these feelings, accept, at this our parting time, this Holy Book.

If Life's storms should break over you, may its sacred pages afford the consolation which will prove your shield and protection, as well as a guiding star, leading eventually, to the Land, where friends are never parted.

                                    Your affectionate friends:
