Welcome to my Hartenstein / Hardenstine Family Genealogy Web Page. I have researched the Hartenstein family who in the early 1800s were living in Herschberg in the Rheinland Pfalz region of Germany. I have been able to document the family for several generations in Germany, beginning with Mathias Hartenstein. This was possible due to research by Klaus Juner, a resident of Herschberg. In the 1830s several siblings of this family immigrated to the United States and settled in various locations.

  • Michael Hardenstine initially settled in New York City, but later moved to Monroe County, Pennsylvania.
  • His sister Louisa and her husband Michael Dreher also lived in New York City for a while before moving to Stark County, Ohio.
  • Ottilia Hartenstein married Gottfried Kammerdiener. They came to New York City and remained there for the rest of their lives.
  • Heinrich Hartenstein died in Herschberg at a young age. When his children came of age, they and their mother immigrated to Stark County, Ohio where many other immigrants from the Herschberg area lived.

This database contains all known United States descendants of Mathias Hartenstein. However, you might want to start with the immigrant ancestor in your line. You can click on any of the links below to jump right to the beginning of your line. In any case, you can navigate to any other person in the database by clicking on a parent or child in any person's record.

I first published a book on the Michael Hardenstine family in 1995. In addition to a genealogy of the family, it included information about church, civil, Bible, and land records, along with some family photographs. After significant additional research on this family, in 2009 I published a series of four volumes that detailed the family of each of the four Hartenstein siblings who immigrated to the United States.

All of that research and the content of all the books are reproduced on this web page. Click on the links above to navigate to the family pages and various chapters that were contained in the books.
