First Generation

1. Martin1 Greiner(1) was born in Germany circa 1702.(2) Martin died circa Nov 1742 in Lancaster Co., PA, at approximately 40 years of age.(3)

He married Maria Barbara Klein in Germany.(4) Barbara was born in Germany 1703.(5) Barbara died after 1754 in Lancaster Co., PA.(6)

Martin was confirmed at 15 years of age in Meckesheim, Germany, 1717.(7) Martin immigrated, 5 Sep 1730, in Philadelphia, Philadelphia Co, PA on Alexander and Ann.(8) An inventory for Martin's estate was conducted Nov 1742 in Lancaster Co., PA. Witnesses were Jacob Hegi, Jacob Meier, John Gingrich, and Jacob Huber.(9) Although some sources place Martin's birth as early as 1700, his confirmation record at Meckesheim at age 15 adds a degree of certainty to the year 1702. Burgert(10) states that no marriage record for Martin has been found. Various sources(11) put his marriage to Barbara at 1727, but if Valentine was born in 1724, as his baptism record at Meckesheim shows, then we must assume the marriage was earlier. We find in Strassburger(12) that Martin arrived in Philadelphia on the ship Alexander and Ann from Rotterdam, William Clymer, master. Martin was included on a list of persons on board that ship who signed an oath of allegiance to the King of England. Martin and Barbara settled in Warwick Township (now Penn) in Lancaster County, near the present village of Penryn. Martin received a warrant for a tract of land on 23 November 1737, which was surveyed that year at 273 acres. Because he was unable to satisfy the conditions of the warrant before he died, Barbara was granted another warrant on 23 December 1743. The land was patented to her on 21 January 1747 and recorded as deed number A13-437 at the courthouse in Philadelphia(13). Contrary to other sources who imply that Barbara was issued an additional tract of land, the copy of the survey at the Pennsylvania State Archives (C51-296) shows that it was the same tract as originally warranted to Martin. Martin's death is proven by an administrative bond issued to his wife Barbara in November 1742, as well as an inventory of his estate conducted in the same month. These documents were found in the Lancaster County Historical Society. Barbara executed two deeds on 16 May 1752 to her sons Adam and Valentine(14). These divided the original tract in half, each brother receiving 136½ acres. Adam received the eastern part of the tract and Valentine the western. Both sons obtained warrants and deeds at a later time for tracts adjoining the original(15). I have found no indication of when Barbara died. Several sources use the date 1752. However, a receipt for payment of seven years of quit-rent was issued to Barbara Gryner on 29 Mar 1754(16). This would seem to indicate she was still living at that time. Most sources seem to be unsure of where Martin and Barbara are buried. Some say it was at the Penryn Union cemetery, others the Greiner farm cemetery in Rapho Township. The Penryn church was not established until 1752. The latter is highly unlikely, since the tract was not warranted until 1750(17). In any case, it is apparent that no record has remained of their burial. Any suggestion for a burial place can only be based on a logical conjecture.

Martin Greiner and Maria Barbara Klein had the following children:

child + 2 i. Valentine2 Greiner was born 1724.

child + 3 ii. Adam Greiner was born 17 Jun 1731.

child 4 iii. Johann Cunradt Greiner was born in Lancaster Co., PA 3 Aug 1734.(18) He was baptized at the Old Warwick (Evangelical) Lutheran church in Elizabeth Twp., Lancaster Co., PA, 27 Apr 1735.(19) No other information has been found to indicate he survived infancy.

Second Generation

2. Valentine2 Greiner (Martin1)(20) was born 1724.(21) Valentine died circa Sep 1794 in PA, at approximately 70 years of age.(22)

He married Anna Barbara Bretz.(23) Barbara died after 1794.(24) No specific evidence for Barbara's birth and death dates has been found.

Occupation: Farmer. He was baptized in Meckesheim, Germany, 15 Oct 1724.(25) He made a will in Lancaster Co., PA, 12 Aug 1794. Witnesses were Frederick Schütz and Frederick Köhler.(26) An inventory for Valentine Greiner's estate was conducted 29 Sep 1794 in Warwick Township, Lancaster Co., PA. Witnesses were Frederick Köhler and Frederick Schütz.(27) Valentine's will was probated in Lancaster, Lancaster Co., PA, 24 Oct 1794.(28) The date of Valentine's birth is uncertain. Although earlier researchers have given the date as 1727 or 1729, Burgert(29) shows the christening of a son Johan Valenthin to Martin and Barbara at Meckesheim, Germany in 1724. It is apparent that he was born before his parents immigrated. The surname of Valentine's wife Barbara had been the source of some confusion in the past. However, her maiden name was found in Bible records of their daughter Anna Barbara Fishburn(30). Although the date of their marriage is uncertain, it would most likely have been before the birth of their first son, Philip, in 1748. In 1752 Valentine received 136½ acres of land in Warwick (now Penn) Township from his mother(31). This was one half of the land originally warranted to his father and eventually patented to his mother in 1747. Valentine warranted a small 13 acre plot adjacent to this land in 1753(32). In 1760 he purchased an additional 30 acres from his brother Adam's half of the parcel(33). During the 1760s Valentine held the mortgage for several parcels of land in and around the village of Manheim. In 1785 he received a patent on 189¼ acres in the upper portion of Rapho Township(34). It appears this was bought for his son Martin, who received "a certain plantation in Rapho township" in Valentine's will. Valentine's son Valentine received the land in Warwick Township(35). Valentine wrote his will in August, 1794, "being very sick but of good and perfect memory and understanding". Since an inventory of his estate was conducted on 29 September, he must have died in the interim. The will states that he was of Warwick Township. This would seem to indicate that he lived on the original farm and not on the land in Rapho Township. Sons John and Philip did not receive their share of the estate (£606,13) until 1802 and 1803, when they released the executors, Valentine and Martin (36). This may have been a result of the death of their mother, Barbara.

Valentine Greiner and Anna Barbara Bretz had the following children:

child 5 i. Philip3 Greiner(37) was born 12 Mar 1748/9.(38) Philip died 2 Dec 1822 at 73 years of age.(39) He married Barbara Fishburn.(40) Barbara was born 26 Aug 1758.(41) Barbara was the daughter of John Philip Fishburn and Catharine Elisabeth Bretz. Barbara died 26 Apr 1822 at 63 years of age.(42) Her body was interred in Oberlin, Dauphin Co, PA.(43)

child 6 ii. Martin Greiner(44) was born 14 Mar 1754.(45) Martin died 2 May 1820 at 66 years of age.(46) His body was interred in Rapho Township, Lancaster Co., PA, Greiner farm cemetery.(47) He married Margarette Fishburn 14 Aug 1780.(48) Margarette was born 24 May 1753.(49) Margarette(50) was the daughter of John Philip Fishburn and Catharine Elisabeth Bretz. Margarette died 26 Apr 1827 at 73 years of age.(51) Her body was interred in Rapho Township, Lancaster Co., PA, Greiner farm cemetery.(52)

child 7 iii. Anna Barbara Greiner(53) was born 26 May 1759.(54) Barbara died 19 Jun 1790 at 31 years of age.(55) Her body was interred 1790 in Hummelstown, Dauphin Co., PA, Hummelstown Lutheran cemetery.(56) She married John Philip Fishburn 14 Aug 1780.(57) John was born in Derry Township, Dauphin Co., PA 5 Nov 1754.(58) John(59) was the son of John Philip Fishburn and Catharine Elisabeth Bretz. John died 7 Sep 1851 at 96 years of age.(60)

child 8 iv. Valentine Greiner(61) was born in PA 21 May 1761.(62) Valentine died 27 Dec 1831 at 70 years of age.(63) His body was interred 1832 in Maytown, Lancaster Co., PA, Maytown Reformed cemetery.(64) He married Catherine Enck.(65) Catherine was born 11 Nov 1762.(66) Catherine died 12 Apr 1825 at 62 years of age.(67) Her body was interred in Maytown, Lancaster Co., PA, Maytown Reformed cemetery.(68)

Occupation: Farmer. He made a will in Lancaster Co., PA, 19 Jun 1826.(69) Valentine's will was probated in Lancaster, Lancaster Co., PA, 13 Mar 1832.(70) Becker (71) states Valentine's birthdate as 8 August 1763. A brother William is listed with the same 1761 birthdate. I have found no other evidence of a brother William. Valentine's tombstone clearly shows his birthdate as well as his age. He was most likely born in Warwick (now Penn) Township, where his father farmed a part of the original Greiner land grant. Valentine inherited all of his father's land in Warwick Township, while his brother Martin received a tract of land in Rapho Township that had been patented by their father(72). Valentine was 33 years old when his father died. He subsequently acquired several tracts of land from neighbors to expand his holdings by nearly 100 acres. The children of Valentine and Catherine are known from Valentine's will, written in 1826(73). John was apparently the eldest, and his birthdate is documented on his tombstone and confirmed by censuses. Philip's birthdate is also on his tombstone, as is daughter Catherine's. She was still single in 1838 when she released her brothers as executors of their father's estate (74). She apparently remained so until her death. Barbara and husband John Helman were both dead by the time Valentine made his will in 1826, leaving three young children. Recently I discovered the baptism of a child of Valentine and Catharine in the records of St. Paul's Reformed church in Manheim. The fact that this is the only known couple with those names, and the time frame of the birth, would indicate that George is correctly placed in this family as the eldest child. No further information is known about him. In 1815, when Valentine was 54 years old, he sold all his land in Warwick Township and bought two adjacent tracts in Donegal (now East Donegal) Township (75). Perhaps the land was bought with his two sons in mind. At the time Valentine wrote his will in 1826 he left the farm on which he lived to his eldest son John. Son Philip inherited the other farm on which he already resided. Valentine's will was written approximately a year after his wife's death. The will required John and Philip to provide his sustenance for the remainder of his life. Valentine lived five years longer.

child 9 v. William Greiner was born 21 May 1761.(76) No further information has been found on this son.

child 10 vi. John A. Greiner was born in Lancaster Co., PA 18 Feb 1766.(77) John died September 1832 at 66 years of age.(78) He married Anna Marie Fishburn.(79) Anna was born 3 May 1769.(80) Anna was the daughter of John Philip Fishburn and Catharine Elisabeth Bretz. Anna died 11 Sep 1836 at 67 years of age.(81)

3. Adam2 Greiner (Martin1)(82) was born in PA 17 Jun 1731.(83) Adam died 22 May 1803 in Penn Township, Lancaster Co., PA, at 71 years of age.(84) His body was interred 1803 in Penn Township, Lancaster Co., PA, Penryn cemetery.(85)

He married Maria Catherine Laber in Lancaster Co., PA, 21 Jun 1757.(86) Catherine was born in Lancaster Co., PA 4 Apr 1737.(87) Catherine was the daughter of Johann Wendel Laber and Anna Margaretha Müller. Catherine died 27 Apr 1789 in Lancaster Co., PA, at 52 years of age.(88) Her body was interred 1789 in Penn Township, Lancaster Co., PA, Penryn cemetery.(89) She was baptized at the Old Warwick (Evangelical) Lutheran Church in Lancaster Co., PA, 27 Apr 1737.(90)

He made a will in Lancaster Co., PA, 19 May 1798. Witnesses were Peter Bear and Frederick Kehler.(91) An inventory for Adam Greiner's estate was conducted 6 Mar 1804 in Warwick Township, Lancaster Co., PA. Witnesses were Martin Greiner, John Erb, and Martin Singer.(92)

Adam Greiner and Maria Catherine Laber had the following children:

child 11 i. [-----]3 Greiner. She married Michael Steckbeck.(93)

child 12 ii. Martin Greiner was born in Lancaster Co., PA 10 Sep 1758.(94) Martin died 5 Apr 1841 at 82 years of age.(95) His body was interred 1841 in Penn Township, Lancaster Co., PA, Penryn Union cemetery.(96) He married twice. He married Catherine [Greiner]. Catherine was born 14 Oct 1769.(97) Catherine died 28 Jan 1787 at 17 years of age.(98) Her body was interred 1787 in Penn Township, Lancaster Co., PA, Penryn Union cemetery.(99) He married Margaret [Greiner]. Margaret was born 28 Sep 1762.(100) Margaret died 17 Jun 1834 at 71 years of age.(101) Her body was interred 1834 in Penn Township, Lancaster Co., PA, Penryn Union cemetery.(102)

Martin was a witness to the inventory of Adam Greiner's estate, 6 Mar 1804.(103)

child 13 iii. John Greiner was born in Lancaster Co., PA 20 May 1774. John died 26 May 1843 in Peters Twp., Franklin Co., PA, at 69 years of age. He married Mary Unger. Mary was born 1779.(104)
